When developing eLearning projects, adding elements like background music can add just the extra pizzaz you need to take the project to the next level. This gets a little tricky when developing a course in Articulate Storyline 2. This authoring tool does not allow you to seamlessly add background music through out the course. You have two options that create a disjointed effect:

Option 1: Add the music to the master slide. Problem: Each time the user advances to the next slide the music restarts.

Option 2: Add the music to each slide. Problem: Same problem as option 1.

Option 3: Cut and snip the music for each slide. Problem: This method is time consuming and the music sounds choppy.

There is another option. I came across this quick work around when I was trying to add background music to a video I developed in Storyline 2. First, I tried to add audio to the master slide but it restarted each time a new slide started. Then, I started to cut and snip the audio for each individual slide but that was time consuming and the result was choppy. Luckily, I found this quick fix on the Articulate Storyline discussion thread.

The fix is simple.

  1. Publish the course.
  2. Open the story.html file in a text editor.
  3. Scroll down to the end of the page after thetag but before the tag.
  4. Add the following code in this section:
  5. Voila!

NOTE:: To play the background music in the HTML5 output, add your  code before the  tag in the story_html5.html file.

Here’s the link to the discussion thread.

Add background music to SL.

Happy eLearning Building!
